SPAIN is located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Its mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea except for a small land boundary with the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar; to the north and north east by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and to the northwest and west by the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal. |
Spanish territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast, and two autonomous cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, that border Morocco. Furthermore, the town of Llívia is a Spanish exclave situated inside French territory. With an area of 505,992 square kilometers (195,365 sq. mi), it is the fourth largest country in Europe. Its capital city is Madrid.

One of the oldest nations in Europe and a land of stricking geograpical, cultural and sentimental contrasts. Spaniards once discovered and conquered new territories beyond the seas, and expanded their language, culture and traditions. As a result, now Spanish - our most cherised treasure - is broadly spoken by some 450 million people around the world.
Oh yes, I forgot. Also, we are an important tourist destination; the homeland of an handful of world leading brands; we've got a bunch of top class sport stars and until recently, we had a growing economy. Anyway, we'll thrive again. That's for sure!!!

Las Marzas, a traditional singing parade from Cantabria
|
On the last evening of February, men in Cantabria used to gather in groups to sing together (a capella) typical pieces called "Las Marzas" or March songs in houses, streets, canteens or church premises. The Marzas words find inspiration in a mixture of both local profane and religious elements.
Neighbours, onlookers and relations would mass around them and give some money and bread, eggs, ham, bacon, wine... as presents. |
Then, they put all these things together in a sort of feast at a canteen or restaurant where women are usually invited to share this special meal.
